8-Bit Is So Passé
Disclaimer: I’m not a big fan of chip music in general, although I’ve been using trackers for over ten years.
An album creating some buzz right now is ”The Music Of Kraftwerk Performed On Vintage 8-Bit Video Game Systems” by 8-Bit Operators. Now, I don’t mind people doing cover versions of Kraftwerk songs (or any other songs for that matter), as long as they’re done well and with respect to the original material (i.e. not some fucking horrible ”funny” version). I’m sure the 8-Bit Operators are being quite sincere, but they still fall very far off the mark, mostly because the whole ”8-bit” novelty is so very fucking worn out.
I’ve only heard the previews on the site, and they convinced me that the album is not worth my money. Some songs sounded good (like ”Pocket Calculator” and ”Computer World”), but most were horrible, with people who seemingly have no clue how to make chiptunes. Tip to people who have found a Game Boy in their closet and have the urge to create tracks with it: Don’t. You probably suck at it.
Make songs that actually sound like songs, not a collection of sound effects from games. Don’t sound like the 8-Bit Operators.
