Superjohan live @ Space:Garage, Riga, Latvia

This is the playlist and MP3 of the live/DJ set I played at Space:Garage in Riga, Latvia. Plenty of edits (done live, I suppose) and other non-original material, as you can see. I was going to play a set that was a lot more housey and non-distorted (more about that in a sec) but was asked to play more acid and something a bit more “techno” in general, as it was a techno party. Well, I can’t comment on that in particular, it’s their choice, but I personally prefer more “open minded” parties. Anyone that listens to Eastern Threat must’ve noticed that I have trouble keeping myself to one genre in particular in a set, except if I’m playing disco. Disco rules and beats every other style of music.

The reason (or part of it) for the crazy distortion is that, quite simply, I like the sound. I acknowledge that the distortion went way overboard in this case, especially in the sample-heavy tracks. I suppose I’ll be toning that down a bit in the future. Can’t really explain why distortion is so dear to me; maybe it’s because of all the badly recorded acid/house tapes I listened to back in the day, maybe it’s the industrial/noise/power electronics influence, who knows.

All in all, just like the organizers of the party, I wasn’t very happy with the acid part of the set. I haven’t been making a lot of acid tracks lately, and getting into that sound wasn’t as simple as I’d expected. “Reggie” and “Serj” are new tracks, and I like them, but I wasn’t really feeling the rest of the acid tracks. Also, I realized after playing that playing 19 tracks in less than an hour is just ridiculous for something that’s supposed to be a live set. While I like the “ghetto” style of DJing and switching tracks at a breakneck pace, it didn’t work in this context. Serves me right for having an unpolished set and overcompensating with a ton of tracks, I guess.

Now, while I bitch about everything I do, I also really really like listening to some of the tracks afterwards. Tracks like “Moving On”, “Bang Bang Bang” (well that’s not really thanks to me is it?), the Dopplereffekt edit, “Serj 1 & 2”, were great. “Sex Ova Da Fone” is *always* fun to play. So I guess I know my direction for the future, which was never really that unclear in the first place: sample-heavy, beat-driven *tracks*. Yeah!

Thanks again to FFF and the Space:Garage peeps for letting me play, it was a great experience. I’ll do better next time! :)
